The Ram Inn

History of the Site

The building is believed to have been built around 1145 ,and is a grade 2 listed building. The current owner (John Humbhries) bought the building for a small sum of £2600 from the brewery in 1968 to prevent the structure from demolition. It was around this time that it stopped being a public house.

The Ram hosts many rooms throughout the structure, and has also a secret tunnel that runs through to the church, which is believed to have been used by Highway men in times of escape. It is also believed to have been built on a pagan burial site.

Paranormal Activity Eyewitness Reports

The Ram Inn is a very popular location for many paranormal investigators, and whether you believe in ghosts or not, a visit is certainly considered an unsettling experience.

John Humphries willingly welcomes all visitors to the building and never hesitates to give tours. The Beaufort room is a big favourite as there has been many sightings of a large black cat walking through, but the most haunted room is supposed to be the Bishops room where nearly all visitors have experienced a strong sense of foreboding, with a select few being witness to the beds rising or the ghost of the old inn keeper.

Investigation Report

This location has become a favourite for the SGPI team, so it will come as no surprise to know that this visit was actually their 5th.

The team arrived at the Ram Inn at around 9.30pm. Where they were instantly met by John who has become to know many of the team very well. The team instantly got to grips with setting up their equipment

As the team were very familiar to the location and the various rooms within the building, they got straight down to business. They firstly performed their protection.

The next stage was performing the standard baseline tests by checking the temperatures in various locations around the pub, as well as using the EMFS. The results are listed below:

Witches Room
TEMP: 16.2 degrees
EMFS: 7 to 10 (Very High)

The Loft
TEMP: 15.7 degrees
EMFS: 0

The Stairs
TEMP: 13.3 degrees
EMFS: 0

The Barn
TEMP: 11.9 degrees
EMFS: 3 to 6

Mayflower Room
TEMP: 12.1 degrees
EMFS: 4 to 7

Bishops Room
TEMP: 14.5 degrees
EMFS: 7 to 10 (Very High)

After all the readings had been completed, the team setup a trigger object test in one of the rooms down stairs. This was made up of a ball and 2 coins led in a little flour, to see if anything/anyone moves them, with a "Lock off" camera focused on the setup. They also placed many motion detectors in the Mayflower room.

The team have recently purchased a new piece of equipment, a motion sensor camera, and decided to set this up in the Witches room with a portable TV to watch back any movement recorded.

The team made their way to the Bishops room where they sat and waited for things to calm down. Once the team felt settled, they started asking questions out load. Pete was using a "Night vision" camera and believed he actually caught sight of something coming from the fireplace. When we played it back the team where not sure what it actually was, but could only make out a white image with wings.

After waiting for an hour for more activity, the team decided to quickly check the camera in the Witches room where they were excited to find that the camera had actually caught a movement. Upon watching the video they noticed to shadows moving from the window ledge across the room to the bed. The team all agreed that it looked like legs. With this exciting development, they all agreed that it was worth setting up the camera again to see if this would be repeated.

The team also checked up on the "Trigger" experiment but found that there had been no change.

Pete then decided to make his way over to the barn, and Sue stood in the doorway. On their return Sue explained that she had seen a green wispy mist forming around Pete, Gill also went to investigate and confirmed that she too had been able to see the mist but could not think of any cause for it. With all this activity in the barn, the team decided that they would all enter it and wait for a repeat of the unexplained mist. After a short while of waiting, they decided that it was not going to happen so moved on.

As a group, they all entered the Mayflower room and decided to perform a seance. They all sat down and linked fingers, Sandra then started to ask questions out load to try and encourage any spirits to join them, or to perform anything to show that they were in the room. Marlene said that she needed to leave the ring as her nose was running, but to the horror of the team, she was actually suffering a very strong nose bleed for no explained reason. She managed to get it stopped eventually, only to find that Gill did not look at all normal. She asked Gill if everything was alright, but all Gill would say was that she felt very tired and depressed for no known reason. The team decided that it was time to leave the room as it was bringing very bad feeling to the team.

They made their way back to the Witches room, briefly checking on the "Trigger" objects on the way, but found that still there had been no movement. The camera in the Witches room however, again proved to be of a great interest with a second recording. This time it had picked up two bright lights that had travelled across the bed. The team performed several tests to confirm that the lights had not been caused by traffic moving outside, before being confident of having another example of paranormal activity on film.

As their tests in the Witches room where coming to an end, several of the team heard one of the motion detectors picking up something downstairs. When they investigated this, the team found that the temperature had dropped to 8.5 degrees, but there was no other signs of movement.

The team performed some other baseline tests, but with nothing else being found or picked up within the grounds, they decided to close the investigation at around 3.30am.

Conclusion

Looking back at the evening, the team felt that the investigation went very well, and believe that the Ram keeps its title of being a very interesting place to investigate. They all agreed that you can never quite tell what is going to happen next.

The two recording captured in the Witches room are something that we would like to get investigated further, as well as the recording Pete got of the white image.

The digital cameras that were used throughout the investigation did pick up several orbs, but nothing of any great size. The voice recorder, unfortunately, picked up nothing.......

***We would like to thank John for allowing the team to perform the investigation at Inn once again.***
